SUMMARY:Thursday Thought Leaders Luncheon: Understanding Lobbying in Georgia – A Candid Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Understanding Lobbying in Georgia A Candid Conversation\n\n \n\nSUPPORTING SPONSOR\n\n\n\n \n\nLobbying is often misunderstood frequently mischaracterized or oversimplified in public conversation. Yet\, lobbyists play a critical role in shaping Georgia's legislative landscape. Whether representing major industries\, nonprofit causes\, or grassroots movements\, these advocates provide essential input to lawmakers and often help guide the policies that affect all of us.\n\n \n \n\n\n\n \nJoin us for a thoughtful\, nonpartisan panel discussion with four professionals from across the lobbying spectrum. Moderated by Randy Travis\, this panel will explore:\n\n\n	Who lobbyists are and what they actually do\n	The difference between corporate\, contract\, volunteer\, and in-house lobbyists\n	How individuals enter the lobbying profession\n	Legal guidelines and ethical considerations of lobbying in Georgia\n	Why lobbying matters to you even if you're not political\n\nGoals of the Event:\n\n\n	Promote public trust in government through education and transparency\n	Help citizens and business leaders understand the mechanics and purpose of lobbying\n	Clarify misconceptions and offer real-world insights into how advocacy happens\n\nThis panel is designed to be engaging\, accessible\, and informative for voters\, business leaders\, nonprofit professionals\, and anyone curious about how government really works. We invite you to attend\, ask questions\, and walk away with a deeper understanding of one of the most influential aspects of public policy.\n\n \nPanelists include:\n\nLewis Massey\n\nHunter Loggins\n\nJamie Lord\n\nJet Toney\n\n\n\nModerator:\n\nRandy Travis\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Randy Travis\n\n\nRandy Travis is a Georgia native who began his journalism career at 17 covering Little League Baseball for this hometown newspaper the Athens Banner-Herald. A graduate of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication\, Randy spent nearly 35 yards as a reporter for WAGA-TV and\, in 1994\, moved into the station's prestigious investigative unit the I-Team. In 2019\, his investigation into faulty roadside drug test kits popular among law enforcement won a Peabody Award.\n\n \n\nRandy retired in 2024. Earlier this year he announced his candidacy for the Lawrenceville City Council in November.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Lewis Massey\n\nLewis Massey is a partner at Impact Public Affairs. In that role\, he represents many clients that need assistance with issues involving state and local government. Clients include Uber\, Tesla\, Amazon\, J.P. Morgan Chase and Delta. \n\nLewis previously served as Georgia's Secretary of State\, as Chief of Staff for Lt. Governor Pierre Howard and as President of SciTrek\, a science and technology museum for children. \n\nLewis and his wife Amy reside in Peachtree Corners and they have three children\, Chandler\, Cameryn and Christian. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Hunter Loggins\n\nHunter began his career with NFIB in 2018 as a Grassroot Manager. Before joining NFIB\, Hunter served several legislative and regulatory roles with the Georgia State Senate\, the Georgia Agribusiness Council\, and the Georgia Beverage Association. As an NFIB Grassroots Manager\, he significantly contributed to the activism programs in Alabama\, Georgia\, North Carolina\, and South Carolina. Hunter is a graduate of the University of Georgia.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Jamie Lord\n\nJamie Lord is a seasoned contract lobbyist and the founder of Georgia Capitol Group\, where she helps nonprofit organizations navigate Georgia's legislative process and amplify their impact at the Capitol. With more than two decades of experience in government affairs\, Jamie has worked across the aisle and across sectors championing education reform\, animal welfare\, mental health\, and access to the courts (you know\, just a few minor issues).\n\nSince founding her firm in 2006\, she's worked with everyone from national foundations to scrappy grassroots coalitions\, helping clients craft smart strategy\, build bipartisan relationships\, and actually get things done under the Gold Dome.\n\nJamie served as lead lobbyist for the passage of Georgia's first two private school choice programs and coordinated the statewide coalition that passed a constitutional amendment on charter schools earning 59% of the vote in a competitive political climate. She's also managed multimillion-dollar PAC strategies\, spoken at state and national conferences\, and been featured in outlets including CNN and every major Atlanta news station.\n\nKnown for her strategic thinking\, plainspoken style\, and deep commitment to cause-based work\, Jamie brings both policy expertise and practical know-how to the table. She is living proof that you don't need neckties or a golf membership to move policy in Georgia.\n\nShe holds a degree in Political Science from Georgia State University and lives in Atlanta's Old Fourth Ward with her husband (also a lobbyist) and their family.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Jet Toney\n\nJet Toney is President of Cornerstone Communications Group\, Inc.\, one of Georgia's most tenured public policy advocacy agencies. Among Cornerstone's clients are the Georgia Affordable Housing Coalition\, the Georgia Independent College Association\, the American Legal Funding Association\, the Georgia Society of Anesthesiologists\, the Georgia Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing\, and the Georgia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.\n \n\nHe has worked as a newspaper reporter and associate editor and has consulted on more than 200 political campaigns at the state and local level. He is a conference presenter on media relations\, political campaigns\, and the legislative process.\n \n\nIn 2011\, Jet was elected by his peers to serve as the founding chair of the Georgia Professional Lobbyists Association (GPLA). He has been re-elected each year. GPLA provides educational opportunities for lobbyists towards full compliance of Georgia's ever evolving laws and regulations governing lobbyist activities and election campaign finance.\n \n\nJet served as Director of the Georgia House of Representatives Public Information Office from 1979 to 1986. He began his advocacy career in 1986 as the lobbyist and PAC Director for the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association. Jet formed Cornerstone Communications Group in 1990 with partner Michael R. Holiman to promote a cafeteria business model offering public relations\, media relations\, association management and lobbying services in one shop. The firm manages state and national professional associations and other organizations and provides digital archiving services to local governments.\n \n\nJet is a cum laude graduate of the University of Georgia where he studied journalism. He and his wife\, Bonnie\, live in Loganville and are active in community and church opportunities.
